Setting up

  1. Install PolyDrive Disk from the Mac App Store.
  2. Open PolyDrive Disk. If the setup screen appears, the file system extension is not on yet.
  3. Turn on the extension. System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Extensions, choose “By Category”, select File System Extensions, then turn on PolyDrive Disk.
  4. Connect the drive. Its partition appears in Finder under Locations within a few seconds, and is listed in the PolyDrive Disk window with Show in Finder and Eject buttons.

Try it without a drive

Download the sample drive (PolyDriveDemo.dmg.zip, 0.7 MB), unzip it and double-click PolyDriveDemo.dmg. macOS attaches the disk image and its ext4 partition appears in Finder as “PolyDrive Demo”. Eject it in Finder when you're done.

Frequently asked questions

Which file systems are supported?
NTFS, ext4 (including ext2 and ext3 volumes the ext4 driver can mount), Btrfs, XFS and F2FS, for reading and writing. LVM volumes are supported too. A single drive removed from a NAS RAID can be opened read-only by default, which avoids changing its array metadata.
Which Macs are supported?
Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 26 or later.
I connected my drive but nothing shows up in Finder.
Make sure PolyDrive Disk is on under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Extensions → File System Extensions, then disconnect and reconnect the drive — macOS only offers a drive to file system extensions when it is connected. If another app that also handles Linux drives is turned on in the same list, turn it off.
How do I eject a drive?
Eject it in Finder, or with the Eject button in the PolyDrive Disk window. Always eject before unplugging, so everything written reaches the drive.
What happens if I unplugged without ejecting?
For compatible Linux drives, PolyDrive Disk checks the file system and recovers its journal before mounting it. Ejecting in Finder remains the safest way to make sure all writes reach the drive.
How do I open an encrypted Linux drive?
When you connect a LUKS-encrypted drive, PolyDrive Disk asks for its passphrase. You can choose to save it in your Mac's keychain, or enter it again next time.
Can I use exFAT or FAT drives?
macOS already supports exFAT and FAT drives directly, so they open with the built-in macOS driver instead of PolyDrive Disk.
Does PolyDrive Disk download anything or go online?
No. PolyDrive Disk works completely offline, and neither the app nor its components have network access.
Do I need to keep the app open?
No. The file system extension serves the drive on its own; the app window is only for setup and for listing and ejecting drives.
Where do I get the source code for the GPL components?
Open Settings → Open source components in the app. It links to the exact source release and SHA-256 for your build, including the complete source code, configuration and build scripts for the GPL components.
How do I remove PolyDrive Disk?
Eject any Linux drives, then drag PolyDrive Disk from Applications to the Trash. Nothing else was installed.
